Staying on track always involves discerning our feelings verses His leadings, and then choosing what is right. These are two motivating agents (feelings & leadings) which are very different in principle, yet similar in terms of really knowing the best Way to go.
Jesus said in John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” Also, as an example in John 5:19 Jesus answered and said to them, “ Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.”
2 Keys for Staying on Track
- The ability to hear His voice (John 10:27)
- The way to respond to that which we hear or see Father doing (John 5:19)
These two principles being walked out in our lives will help us to stay on track. It can be a little mysterious “hearing God” and/or “seeing Father”, but sometimes we need to close our ears and shut our eyes for this to happen. I know from my own 30 year quest with God that I have both heard His voice in my heart, and seen what He was doing (discernment) in various situations and carried them out. I have not been 100%, but it is a lifetime learning and growing process for us all.
Love is the Track
Years ago Tina Turner popularized her song entitled “What’s Love Got to do with it?” Let me ask you her question. In terms of our being “followers of Jesus”, what’s love got to do with it?
Love in it’s pure and healthy state will lead us to do the right thing. Hence, walking in righteousness is the desired way of life. That’s what love has to do with it! The counterfeit deception is often our emotions which draws us away or causes us to wander off track.
- Love leads us like this ~ I seek, I listen, and I do.
- Our feelings often draw us away ~ I think, I want, and I do.
“I think, I want, I do” becomes our track or better said our rut! The key to staying on track then would be to maintain the Way of love “I seek, I listen, I do”.
Summarizing the Track
Staying on track is all about;
- Tuning our heart in on our Father, who is Love (1 John 4:16).
- Having dialog with Him in our decision making processes.
- Training our heart to discern His voice (John 10:27).
- Obeying what we have discerned.
