Reversing the Curse of Fatherlessness

Reversing the Curse of FatherlessnessFatherless

God’s heart has always been about reversing the curse of fatherlessness. We see that in the last verse of the Old Testament.

Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. 6  And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

The curse is brought about by overbearing child rearing or the polar opposite which is some type of abandonment. These dysfunctions always  reciprocate themselves into the generational links of any family tree. Fatherlessness is no respecter of social status, wealth, education, race, religion, culture or any other sub-culture. It’s a matter of the heart!

Fatherlessness Defined

Paul further addresses this issue in Ephesians 6:4 “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. And in Colossians 3:21 he repeats “Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

It is God’s intention for every child that parents provide them with a loving environment. Children have an invisible built in hunger for love. When that need is not met by parents either through neglect or aggressively, it is perceived as rejection or “provocation”. This stirs up negative emotions in a child. Provocation could therefore be defined as aggressive (overbearing discipline, condescension and devaluing, or physical, sexual, emotional abuse). Rejection would be the opposite which could be defined as passive aggressive behavior (absenteeism, passivity, emotionally out of touch, or simply no expressed love or attention).

Fatherlessness in Our Family Tree

No matter where we find ourselves in our lineage, or our family tree, we have to be deliberate if we want to see change. This change can come  to our fathers generations that are still living as well as the ones following ours including the ones not born yet! Someone will have to take responsibility to bring about this most important change. I personally have seen this at work in my family tree!

Fatherlessness Reversed

Men, this is what men do. We take responsibility. In order to initiate reversing the curse of fatherlessness, we will need to apply three important Biblical principles. Nothing ever changes by only reading or hearing truth, we must apply it in order to get the desired results.

  1. ·         Forgive our fathers for their weakness’ and misrepresenting love to us in our upbringing.
  2. ·         Ask forgiveness of our children for our weakness’ and misrepresenting love to them.
  3. .         Begin to express love to them like never before. Pure love usually costs us time, money, and energies.

By applying these three principles,  transformation of your family tree will move from a perpetual rotting tree to a flourishing oak beginning almost instantly.

  1. very good read! I can relate…but how can I forgive a father who abandoned me and now is passed?

    1. Thanks Mark, the forgiveness comes from the victim of which you were. Release and increase spiritually, emotionally, and mentally also comes to you. May I suggest prayer in your own words to the Father, telling Him you want to release the emotional hurt and rejection you suffered as a little boy, and that you choose to forgive the wrong done to you by your earthly father. You may include “I’m asking You Father, to father me in ways that my heart longed for as a boy”. I pray Mark that this will help your heart. Honestly, if you would like more details on this subject I just included a link to a 2 cd audio resource that is a message I spoke in detail about this at IHOP KC MO. I just listened to it last night myself, and it can and does help people… blessings to you and thanks for your kind words…. Bob
