What does it mean to sin?
The Biblical definition is “missing the mark”. Let’s unpack “hitting the mark” and that will reveal what it means to “miss the mark.” In simplified terms it is choosing right over wrong. It could be further defined as doing Gods will for your life (hitting the mark), rather than giving in to your flesh (missing the mark).
Second question; what is “the mark”? The simple answer is “that which pleases the Father.” So to answer the original question “what does it mean to sin”? Doing that which is not pleasing to the Father.
Wow, how many of us miss the mark multiple times a day? The good news is, He offers grace. The bad news is, you and I often take advantage of His grace and missing the mark becomes a lifestyle. Living a lifestyle of missing the mark is not living to God, rather it is living to self.
1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. (1 John 2:1-2 NKJV)
So 1 John 2:1 can be unpacked like this; “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin.” (so that you may not miss the mark)
Father God is calling you and I to a higher standard or a higher mark. Love for God is the healthy motivation to hit the mark. My next blog post will focus on this motivating factor to help you and I raise our standard in a spiritually healthy way.
