In conjunction with the previous post, Paul points out clearly what restricts us relationally with the Father and with others. It’s our own affections!
Choices Changed my Life
When I first notably tasted how much the Father loved me, it was in the arms and words of 6 godly men that saw my brokenness and accepted me in my weakness. I have since experienced my Heavenly Father’s voice many times in a similar fashion. I have noticed that when I seek Him, I find Him, but when I seek after my own desires or affections, I don’t hear His voice so clearly and I don’t experience His acceptance although I know He accepts me.
Choices in Scripture
Let’s look at II Corinthians 6:14-16 where we see the contrasted characteristics of the world and of Heaven that we can choose from.
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God (2 Corinthians 6:14-16 NKJV)
We are of God, and when we choose the things of this world as fulfilling our desires we become “unequally yoked”! Let’s look at the list more clearly.
Righteousness (obedience to Word) Lawlessness (disobedience to Word)
Light (transparent) Darkness (hiddenness)
Christ (Jesus) Belial (a name for the Devil)
Believer (follower) Unbeliever (wanderer)
~ Idols (other worldly nouns)
In verse 16b Paul calls believers, in which you are, the temple of the Living God! How can God’s temple be tainted with lawlessness, darkness, Belial, unbelievers, and idols?
Choices to Change Your Life
I am convinced that when we choose obedience, transparency, Jesus, fellowship with believers that we will find a consistent and more intimate Fathering relationship. A sense of closeness to the Father, His embrace, His voice, His blessing, His revelation, His Kingdom here on earth! It’s really our choice what we feed on. Where do your affections lie?
Study the list above.
- Identify where your affections lie in terms of this list.
- Consider the changes that need to be implemented in your life.
- You may need to repent (change your mind, thinking, convictions).
- You may need to confess some darkness to God or others (secret sins).
