Many Christians today have an unhealthy perspective of what a relationship with God really is. We too often take that for granted. We convince ourselves with… “Oh you know God says He will never leave us or forsake us!” and I believe those very words, but Jesus also said this in Matthew 7:21ff “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter into heaven… I never knew you, depart from Me.”
These words of Christ should be very sobering to many of us! Perhaps we would be wise to ask of Him, “Lord, Lord how do I assure myself that I really know You?” Let me say this, if we really know Him, the fruit of our lives will display godliness, kindness, faithfulness, purity, forgiveness, and repentance.
King David, the Psalmist of Israel, the “man after God’s own heart” experienced a distance from the Lord that drew him into a posture of repentance. Here is a man that trusted God with his very life against ferocious enemies on multiple occaisions, and God was with him giving him victory after victory. But David, like most of humankind, had a weakness or two.One of his was lust for beautiful women, even married ones.
After his adultrous sin with Bathsheba, and then murdering her husband Uriah, David, by God’s mercy, came to realize the separation in his life from his source of victorious living, which was God Himself. Sin left alone brings separation from God (hinders intimacy). Let’s meditate on the words of David in Psalms 51:10-13, apply them to the areas of our lives that cause separation from God, and draw near to Him with a pure heart.
“10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You.” (Psalms 51:10-13 NKJV)
